We are always looking for outstanding applicants for Ph.D., postdoc, research scientist, and undergrad intern positions with a strong background in at least one of these areas:
1) climate physics (theory and modeling),
2) nonlinear dynamics (especially choas, turbulence, and rare events),
3) applied and computational mathematics,
4) scientific machine learning (theory and practice).

Currently, our interests are mainly in the direction of ideas, approaches, and questions discused in the following papers and their intersections
A) Missing the butterfly and predicting the past: Features or bugs of accurate AI weather models?
B) Can AI weather models predict out-of-distribution gray swan tropical cyclones? (PNAS) and Predicting regional gray swans via translocation: AI weather models and Dubai’s unprecedented 2024 rainfall (Science Advances)
C) AI-boosted rare event sampling to characterize extreme weather (PRL)
D) Designing probabilistic AI monsoon forecasts to inform agricultural decision-making and Decision-oriented benchmarking to transform AI weather forecast access: Application to the Indian monsoon
E) Analytical and AI-discovered stable, accurate, and generalizable subgrid-scale closure for geophysical turbulence (PRL)

All researchers will benefit from our group’s involvement in multi-institutional, international collaborative projects and UChicago’s thriving and expanding programs in AI for Climate, Climate Science, AI+Science, Computational and Applied Math, Data Science, and Climate Systems Engineering, as well as Argonne National Lab’s initiative around AI+science and climate science and our collaborations with tech companies.
